Every time you turn the whole cube (y), you lose a moment and lose sight of the pieces. Good cubers do very few.
To bring a pair to the front-right, prefer U or U': the top turns, not the cube.
For the left slots, use the mirror of your inserts (L' U' L instead of R U R'). The F2L library shows them with “Front left”.
Remember: Count your rotations over a few slow solves: just counting them makes them drop.
Troubleshooting
- I turn the cube without noticing
- Do 5 very slow solves, counting each rotation out loud.
- Left inserts are hard for me
- Do R U R' then its mirror L' U' L, 20 times each: your left hand gets used to it quickly.
