Lesson 2 of 6 · The Roux method
The first block
Build a 1×2×3 block on the left face, with the left center and the bottom center.
Keyboard: Enter to continue, ← to go back. Keep your hands on the cube.

The first block sits at the bottom of the left face: the bottom-left edge, then two corner-edge pairs, one in front and one in back.
Start with the bottom-left edge, in place, next to the left center. Then build a corner-edge pair and insert it in front, like an F2L pair.
Do the same for the back pair. The block needs no algorithms: it’s intuition, like intuitive F2L.
Good Roux solvers plan the whole first block during inspection, in 7 to 10 moves.
Remember: Your first block can be any color. At first, always use the same one to keep your bearings.
Troubleshooting
- I break the first pair while making the second
- Use r and M moves: they don’t touch the left block.
- My block takes 20 moves
- That’s normal at first. Replay the same scramble several times and look for a shorter solution.
