You already plan the whole cross during inspection. The next step is knowing where the first pair will be once the cross is done, so you can go for it without searching.
Spot the corner and edge of a pair, then follow them in your head during the cross moves. Pick a pair the cross doesn’t move: that’s the easiest.
Sometimes a cross edge and a pair are already close: by adding one or two moves, you solve the cross and the pair in one go. That’s an “X-cross”. Don’t force it: take it when it shows up.
Remember: Start by only knowing where the first pair’s corner will be. The edge will come later.
Troubleshooting
- I lose track of the pair during the cross
- Pick a pair whose pieces are on top: the cross almost never moves them.
- Inspection is too short
- Practice without the timer: plan the cross, say where the pair will be, then check.
